Description
The mountains of Red Rock and the mountains throughout western North America were formed 65 million years ago through a number of geological forces called The Continental Shuffle predominantly fractured thrust faults where the earths crust collided with fossilized sand dunes.
Known throughout the world as the most spectacular faults the The Keystone Thrust where the older rock layers were dramatically thrust over the young rock layers. This phenomenon is visibly identifiable in La Madre Mountain and the Turtlehead Peak.
The red color was a result of a great concentration of iron oxide, producing a vibrant crimson that we see today.
Trekking here presents much different challenges than what I have accustomed to in the Canadian Rockies, though a good supply of water is mandatory. I did not find it as tough as I thought it would be in extreme heat. I even consumed my water supply sparingly. A lower altitude with good atmospheric condition did not seem as tiring as I did at times climbing the Canadian Rockies at higher elevation in any given season.
